Meet our Staff
Dr. Mark Olson
Pastor Mark, as the children like to call him, was called to our church in 2017. He had previously served five other Baptist churches as Pastor or Senior Pastor. He believes that local churches are called to lead people to believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and to help Christian grow strong in the faith. Mark holds three degrees: a B.A. from Wake Forest University, an M. Div. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Ph. D. in New Testament and Early Christianity from the University of Virginia. In addition to serving as a church pastor, he also taught religious studies at Sweet Briar College, Virginia Tech. He served for as President of the John Leland Center for Theological Studies for ten years. He has authored three books about the New Testament, the most recent of which is Romans: The Letter that Changes Christian History.
Mark and his wife Linda have two grown daughters: Kristin, an Assistant United States Attorney in Iowa, and Jaclyn, who earned a Master of Social Work degree from George Mason University and currently resides with her husband David in Sydney, Australia.
Rev. Allan Smith
A native of Virginia who was raised in South Carolina, Allan was called to Haymarket Baptist Church in July 2020, having served in a variety of ministerial roles in churches located in South Carolina, Virginia, Texas, and, most recently, North Carolina. Allan earned a B.A. from the University of Virginia and worked in operations analysis before enrolling at Duke Divinity School, where he completed his M. Div.
Allan appreciates the local church being a place where people of all ages and backgrounds worship together. He believes the church is a place of discovering who you are and whose you are in Christ while considering how to be Christian in God’s world. It is also important the church considers those questions as a community of faith while becoming integrally connected and engaged with the local community. Allan is excited to be serving with Haymarket Baptist Church in God’s ongoing redemptive work in the world.
